Lake Land College receives dental hygiene grant to improve equipmentThe Lake Land College Board of Trustees approved a grant awarded to the college by the Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation Community Grants Program in the amount of $7,000. This is the first award the college has received from the Foundation, whose mission is to improve the oral health of residents in Illinois with an emphasis on programs for children. Funds from the award will purchase a pediatric digital x-ray sensor and a portion of the accompanying digital x-ray machine for the LLC Dental Hygiene Clinic. “This is a great opportunity for the college as the clinic currently lacks a pediatric sized sensor which has been an obstacle in evaluating the teeth of younger patients,” said Scott Lensink, president of the college. “This new equipment will move the clinic away from costly film processing, provide a much needed move for the program’s re-accreditation in 2013, and will offer students the possibility of training on the most current industry equipment.” Approximately 255 children visit the Lake Land College Dental Hygiene Clinic each year for their oral health needs. “Too many children in Illinois suffer from oral health disease that could have been prevented with proper oral health education and preventive care,” said Lora Vitek, director of philanthropy and community relations of the Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation. “Poor oral health not only can affect overall health, but also a child’s self-esteem, speech and ability to focus and learn.
